WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – UNCW earned a 64-55 victory at Monmouth in its Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball road opener on Thursday night at the OceanFirst Bank Center.
The Seahawks improved to 12-4 overall and stand 2-1 in league play. The Hawks fell to 3-13 and are 1-2 in the league.
All nine UNCW players to play scored, led by Sean Moore's 13 points to go with seven rebounds. Nolan Hodge hit three three-pointers also to reach double-digits with 10 markers.
Monmouth Abdi Bashir Jr. contributed a game-high 18 while guard Madison Durr collected 14 points.
The Seahawks raced out to a 17-4 lead over the first seven minutes of play by hitting 7-of-11 shots and holding the host Hawks to 1-of-13 to start the game.
Monmouth, however, clawed back to tie it twice in the final four minutes, but UNCW closed the opening period on a 7-0 run to carry a 34-27 lead into halftime.
The Seahawks neutralized eight straight Monmouth points down the stretch with a 13-3 run, including 10 consecutive points that extended their advantage to a game-high 62-48 with 92 seconds to go.
UNCW concludes its opening conference road swing on Saturday at Hofstra.
