HEMPSTEAD, New York – UNCW's Donovan Newby fashioned his second 30-point effort of the season, but Hofstra converted 12 three-pointers to turn back the Seahawks, 66-63, in Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex.
The Pride evened their league record at 2-2 and stand 10-7 overall. The Seahawks are also 2-2 with a 12-5 overall mark.
Newby fashioned 21 of his game-high 30 points in the second half. The graduate standout matched a UNCW program record with eight three-pointers made.
Three Hofstra players surpassed 10 points: Jean Aranguren (20), Khalil Farmer (13) and Michael Graham (11), who had a double-double for the second straight game with 11 rebounds.
The Seahawks erased an 11-point deficit with a 15-3 run down the stretch to take a 63-61 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the game. Aranguren, however, responded with an old-fashioned three-point play with half-a-minute remaining to take the lead back for good.
The two CAA rivals traded the lead seven times and were tied five times, but Hofstra scored the final seven points of the first half to enter halftime ahead 29-24. The Pride then built a double-digit lead, 42-32, four-and-a-half minutes into the second half and led most of the final period before UNCW's late charge.
UNCW returns home on Thursday to play Northeastern at 7 p.m.
