Seahawks Drop CAA Opener in Overtime

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball program dropped a narrow 65-61 overtime decision to Towson in the Coastal Athletic Association opener for both teams on Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Tigers (6-8, 1-0 CAA) outscored the Seahawks (10-4, 0-1 CAA) 8-4 in the extra period after the two teams traded the lead nine times with 12 ties in regulation.

UNCW's Harlan Obioha fashioned his second-straight double-double with season-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Donovan Newby collected 17 points and matched his career-high with seven assists while Joshua Corbin's 11 points represent his third straight game in double figures.

Preseason All-CAA First-Teamer Tyler Tejada paced all scorers with 21 points while Christian May also achieved double-digits with 10 points to go with eight rebounds.

The Seahawks built a double-digit lead twice in the first half on a pair of Newby three-pointers, but Towson battled back with a 13-0 run late in the second half. A 7-2 UNCW spurt over the final 2:47 before halftime made it 29-all entering the intermission.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the second half that ended even at 57-57 to send the game to overtime where the Tigers prevailed with the game's final six points.

UNCW returns to action on Saturday vs. Campbell at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field (Towson – 35.2 percent, UNCW – 33.9 percent) … UNCW was out-rebounded for the third time this season … The loss snapped a six-game home winning streak … Obioha had 12 points in the second half … The Seahawks out-rebounded the Tigers, 20-19, in the second half … The game was tied for 12 minutes … It was UNCW's third highest attended game this year (4,719) … It was the Seahawks first overtime game this season and third contest decided by less than five points.
