Seahawks Rally Past Camels In Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tanner Thach's single with two out in the bottom of the eighth plated the go-ahead run as UNCW scored three runs with two out in the inning to knock off Campbell, 8-7, in the series opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 30-16 with the win and 15-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association. It marks UNCW's 29th season with 30 wins since 1999. The Camels, who have now dropped their last four games, slipped to 27-17 and 8-11 in the CAA.

In the Seahawk eighth, John Newton opened the scoring with a pinch-hit RBI double down the rightfield line. Jac Croom followed with an RBI double of his own to score Newton and tie the game at 7-all. Thach delivered an RBI single to right to give the Seahawks an 8-7 lead.

The top of the UNCW order of Croom, Aidan Evans, Thach and Trevor Marsh, all had two hits and combined to go 8-for-17 with seven runs batted in. Six doubles were a season-high for the Seahawks.

Cody Benton (1-0), the eighth of nine pitchers used by the Seahawks, was credited with the win.

Luke Craig struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy led the CU lineup with three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Lawson Harrill hit his league-leading 22nd home run of the season and Reed Stallman belted his 11th.

Jackson Roberts (6-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing all three runs in the eighth.
