UNCW Heading Back To CAA Tournament Finals

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Ryan Calvert tossed three innings of shutout relief and Trevor Marsh added three hits as UNCW advanced to the finals of the Coastal Athletic Association baseball tournament with an 8-5 win over top-seeded College of Charleston on Saturday at Brooks Field.

UNCW raised its record to 38-19 with the win while the Cougars fell to 40-13. Charleston will play Delaware in an elimination game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Seahawks will face the winner of that elimination game at 12:30 p.m.

The Seahawks jumped on the Cougars early with six runs in the top of the first inning. Tanner Thach opened the scoring with a two-run single to ignite the outburst. Alec DeMartino followed with an RBI single and Kevin Jones added the final run on an infield single.

Marsh's three hits were a game-high and he extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Aiden Evans added two hits and Brock Wills knocked in two runs.

RJ Sales (10-3) picked up the win striking out six over five innings. Luke Craig followed Calvert and nailed down his sixth save of the season.

Kevin Maddon had two hits, including his 13th homer of the season, for the Cougars, who finished with four errors.

Starter Jake Brink (8-3) was saddled with the loss.

UNCW has now advanced to the championship for the second straight season and eight of the last nine years.
