Diamond Hawks Upended By Charleston, 8-5

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston handed UNCW its first conference loss of the season as the Cougars took advantage of eight walks in an 8-5 win on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Cougars extended their winning streak to five with the road win and improved to 19-8 overall and 5-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Seahawks, meanwhile, saw their four-game winning streak halted and dropped to 18-12 and 6-1.

Cole Mathis, Luke Wood and Dariyan Pendergrass each collected two hits for the Cougars, who grabbed a 4-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning. In that inning, two of the runs scored on a wild pitch and the other crossed the plate on a groundball out by Pendergrass.

Jake Brink (5-1) earned the win and Davis Aiken posted his sixth save.

Aiden Evans, John Newton and Bryan Arendt all had three hits for the Seahawks.

Tanner Thach belted his 16th home run of the season with two on in the seventh inning.

RJ Sales (5-2) lasted five innings, walking a career-high six and striking out five.

The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start. UNCW welcomes back its 2004 UNCW CAA Tournament championship and will recognize baseball alumni before the game.
