Late Home Runs Lift Seahawks Over Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – Late inning home runs by UNCW's Mary Sobataka and Carson Fleming lifted the Seahawks over North Carolina, 4-2, on the road on a windy Wednesday evening of non-conference softball action at Anderson Stadium.

The Seahawks (18-15) knocked off the Tar Heels (24-10) for the second straight season. UNCW has now won three of its last five meetings against UNC dating back to 2018.

UNCW's Tayler Vitola, who was named the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year early Wednesday, collected her second career four-hit day and first of 2024.

The Seahawks, trailing 2-0 after two innings, pulled even in the top of the third on Lauryn Richardson's two-run triple to left field that scored Fleming and Vitola.

The game was a 2-2 deadlock through five innings until Sobataka launched the go-ahead homer over the left-center wall in the sixth to put the Seahawks in front 3-2. It marked the second round-tripper of the season for Sobataka.

Fleming, who had two hits in her fourth start of the season, then shot her first career home run an inning later to give UNCW an insurance run entering the bottom of the seventh.

Junior right-handers Emily Winstead (7-4) and Kara Hammock (S, 1) held the Tar Heels scoreless over the final five innings to earn the Seahawks' first road victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since 2017.

UNCW resumes Coastal Athletic Association play this weekend at home vs. Charleston. The Seahawks will celebrate Alumni Weekend and the 40th season of fastpitch softball at UNCW.
