WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's Lauren Cope delivered a three-hit, three RBI performance as the Seahawks opened Softball Alumni Weekend with a 9-4 win over Charleston on Friday night at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks moved to 19-15 and 9-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Cougars fell to 8-24 and 2-11 in the league.
Junior Kara Hammock (10-4) pitched around early-inning jams to go the distance with two earned runs allowed. The 6-2 right-hander tossed a season-high 132 pitches.
Charleston's Ryley Kutter (0-7) was tagged with the loss in 4.1 innings of relief with seven runs allowed along with a pair of strikeouts.
Cope accounted for a third of the Seahawks' hits with Skylar Stockton also recording a multi-hit effort. Junior Lauryn Richardson, meanwhile, also drove in three runs after entering early at third base.
UNCW found itself in an early 3-0 hole entering the bottom of the second. The Seahawks worked three walks along with a pair of hits to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Walks by Mary Sobataka and Cope, along with Stockton's 16th hit by pitch of the season, loaded the bases for Richardson, who lined a two-run single up the middle to put UNCW ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the third.
Another two-run single, this time by Cope, in the fourth capped a four-run inning that put the Seahawks in firm control, 9-3.
Charleston did load the bases in the top of the seventh and scored a run on a single. The Seahawks, however, escaped the jam with a double play to end the game and snap a four-game CAA losing skid.
UNCW and Charleston resume action on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Seahawks will wear special '85 throwback jerseys and honor a group of alums in a pregame ceremony.
