WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW and Campbell split a Coastal Athletic Association softball doubleheader to close out the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks (25-18, 14-7 CAA) took the first game 6-3 before the Camels (27-18-1, 16-5 CAA) claimed the second game and the series 6-0 in six innings. The second game was called with one out in the bottom of the sixth due to lightning and rainfall.
UNCW travels to Drexel for a three-game series in Philadelphia next weekend.
GAME 1 | UNCW 6, Campbell 3
UNCW's Allison Corbin and Mary Sobataka each drove in two runs via a double and home run, respectively, in the third inning to engineer a 6-3 win in Saturday's opener.
Sobataka's third home run of the season highlighted a three RBI day that was started in the first inning with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
The Seahawks broke it open in the third with four hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk. Corbin, who pinch hit for Cassidy Relay, turned on the first pitch of her at-bat to double down the left field line and score pinch runner Madison Biddle and second baseman Tayler Vitola. Sobataka then followed with her homer to put UNCW in front, 5-0.
Right fielder Morgan Britt added another run in the fifth on an RBI single to left field.
Junior Kara Hammock (13-4) went the distance and matched her career-high with 13 wins. The right-hander struck out four and worked around three unearned runs in the top of the seventh.
Campbell's Isabella Smith (19-6) went 2.1 innings and was tagged for four runs on three hits and one walk.
GAME 2 | Campbell 6, UNCW 0 (6 innings)
Campbell scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to win the series before rain halted the game with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Camels totaled 12 hits against UNCW's Emily Winstead (10-6) and Carrigan Ewers.
Campbell's Madilyn Gillespie and Tristin Doster each drove in two runs while designated player Ashlyn Porter collected an RBI in her three-hit day.
Right-hander Hannah Leierer (3-7) limited the Seahawks to two hits in 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Vitola singled past the circle with one out in the bottom of the sixth to have a hit in eight of her last nine games. The game was then delayed and later called due to lightning and rainfall.
