Vitola Reaches 200 Career Hits

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior second baseman Tayler Vitola recorded her 200th career hit in UNCW's 2-1 setback at Drexel in the Coastal Athletic Association softball series opener on Friday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field.

The Dragons (14-26, 9-12 CAA) snapped an eight-game losing skid with the narrow win over the Seahawks (25-19, 14-8 CAA), who will secure a CAA Tournament berth with their next win.

Down 2-1 with two outs and two on in the seventh, left fielder Skylar Stockton worked a full count and then deposited a single into shallow center field. Pinch runner Grace Hennessy attempted to score the tying run from second, but a one-hop throw by Drexel centerfielder Grace Abbonizio beat Hennessy for the game's final out.

Abbonzio's go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth put the Dragons back in front after UNCW tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Peyton Carver pinch-hit RBI infield single to score a heads-up Morgan Britt from second base.

Drexel was the first on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when shortstop Kalea Calugay's RBI groundout scored Abbonzio.

Vitola, along with third baseman Allison Corbin, had two hits for UNCW. The speedy infielder is the fourth Seahawk to reach 200 career hits.

Drexel's Lindsay Nelson (8-12) went the distance with four strikeouts and stranded nine on base.

Junior Kara Hammock (13-5) tossed all six innings with four strikeouts and five hits allowed.

The series resumes on Saturday at Noon.
