UNCW Tops #20 Coastal Carolina, 6-4

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jac Croom tripled twice and drove in two runs while Luke Craig retired the final 10 batters of the game to lift UNCW past 20th-ranked Coastal Carolina, 6-4, in college baseball action Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks gained a split of the home-and-home series with the win and pushed their record to 18-11 with their fourth straight win. Coastal Carolina, meanwhile, dipped to 20-8 with the road loss.

With the game tied at 4-all in the bottom of the seventh, Kevin Novobilsky ignited a rally with a one-out single. With two outs, Aiden Evans doubled into the right-center field gap to score pinch runner Dylan Schaefer from first base for a 5-4 lead. Croom then followed with a triple to left, scoring Evans and making it 6-4.

Craig (3-0) entered the game in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and induced an inning-ending groundball out to shortstop. The lefthander set the Chanticleers down in order the next three innings to close it out. Craig struck out six and recorded four groundball outs.

Bryan Arendt connected on his sixth homer of the season in the fourth to give UNCW a 4-1 lead.

UNCW starter Ryan Calvert struck out a career-high eight in four innings of work.

Sam Antonacci collected a game-high three hits for Coastal, which dropped to 3-5 on the road. Caden Bodine and Derek Bender both had two hits and knocked in two runs.

Josh O'Neill (1-1) was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings.

Seahawk pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and walked just one batter.

The Seahawks host the College of Charleton in a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
