Seahawks on Wrong End of 1-0 Pitching Duel

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Campbell's Isabella Smith held the UNCW softball team hitless to deliver a 1-0 setback to the Seahawks in Friday's Coastal Athletic Association series opener at Boseman Field.

The Camels (26-17-1, 15-4 CAA) and Seahawks (24-17, 13-6 CAA) will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Smith (19-5) no-hit UNCW with six strikeouts and two walks to graduate outfielders Morgan Britt and Skylar Stockton. Britt advanced as far as third base with two outs in the bottom of the third, but Smith stranded her with a strikeout.

Junior Emily Winstead (10-5) was impressive against the Camels with her sixth complete game of the season. The 2022 CAA Pitcher of the Year struck out eight and scattered three hits with one run allowed.

Campbell scratched across the contest's lone run in the top of the fourth. The frame started with a Tyra Parker double to left-center. Winstead then induced a fly-out and strikeout, but third baseman Madilyn Gillespie knocked a two-out single up the middle to score Parker.

The second-place Camels gained one game on first-place Delaware, who were shut out vs. Hofstra on Friday. The Seahawks fell to a tie for third with Stony Brook, who have won 14 straight games (10 consecutive league contests) following its series-opening win against Drexel.
