Sales Leads UNCW In Series Opener

Seahawks top Northeastern, 11-5

BROOKLINE, Mass. – RJ Sales tossed six shutout innings and struck out a career-high 10 as UNCW knocked off Northeastern 11-5 on Friday afternoon in the first game of a key Coastal Athletic Association series at Friedman Diamond.

The Seahawks improved to 25-13 with their seventh straight win and to a league-leading 11-2 in conference play. The Huskies, who have now dropped their last three, dropped to 27-10 and 9-4.

UNCW got on the board quickly in the first as Tanner Thach singled home the first run and Trevor Marsh added a RBI double later in the inning. The Seahawks pushed four across in the top of the first and then built a 9-0 lead with a five-run third.

Sales lowered his earned run average to 2.92 while raising his record to 7-2. He scattered three hits and walked three in six innings of work.

Marsh doubled and homered twice to lead the Seahawks. Thach homered for his fifth straight game and added two hits. Aidan Evans added a pair of hits.

With his roundtripper, Thach is now tied for the program's single-season record with 21 home runs.

Alex Lane, Mike Sirota, and Carmelo Musacchia all had two hits for the Huskies. Lane finished with two runs batted in.

Starter Jake Gigliotti (4-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in his only inning on the mound.

The Huskies and Seahawks play game two of the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
