Diamond Hawks Take Care of #12 Wake Forest, 8-5

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tanner Thach doubled, homered, and knocked in two runs as UNCW used a 4-run fifth inning to rally past 12th-ranked Wake Forest on Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

UNCW picked up its second ranked win of the season and improved to 24-13 with their sixth straight win. The Demon Deacons, meanwhile, dropped to 24-12.

In the fifth inning, Thach and Alec DeMartino started things with back-to-back one-out doubles. Brock Wills plated the second run and John Newton lined a two-out single up the middle to score the final two runs for a 5-3 lead.

Joining Thach with multi-hit games were Jac Croom, Trevor Marsh and Newton. Wills and Newton both knocked in two runs.

Thach moved into a tie for second on UNCW's single-season home run list with a two-run shot in the sixth.

Case Stroup (2-0) earned the win in relief while Cody Benton converted his second save of the season.

Nick Kurtz and Jake Reinisch both had two hits for WFU. Kurtz belted his 17th home run of the season as Wake Forest grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Zach Johnston (1-1) took the loss for Wake Forest.

The Seahawks visit Northeastern this weekend for a Coastal Athletic Association series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
