Softball Wins Fifth Straight Game

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team erupted for six first-inning runs to pick up its fifth straight win with a 10-1 road victory over North Carolina A&T at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks improved to 22-15 and are 12-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association following their season-high run total against the Lady Aggies, who stumbled to 8-28 and 2-14 in the circuit.

Junior Emily Winstead (10-4), who had seven strikeouts in five innings, joined teammate Kara Hammock as UNCW's second 10-game winner this season. The Seahawks now boast a pair of double-digit winners in the same season for the sixth time ever and first since the pair accomplished it in 2022.

Senior Tayler Vitola extended her on-base streak to eight games with three of UNCW's 10 hits. The former All-CAA performer has totaled 16 hits in her last 10 contests.

The Seahawks got to N.C. A&T starter Kayla Douglas (1-7) early when 11 Seahawk batters scored six runs in the top of the first. Left fielder Skylar Stockton started the scoring shower when she drove in two runs on a double, the second of six hits in the frame.

UNCW was spotted three runs courtesy of a pair of Lady Aggie errors and third baseman Lauryn Richardson made it 6-0 with an RBI single to cap the big inning.

Vitola's two-RBI single in the third provided two more runs and Stockton put the finishing touches on the series-opening win with a two-run home run, her third of the season, in the seventh.

The series resumes on Saturday at 1 p.m.
