Diamond Hawks Take Series Opener From Towson, 8-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Alec DeMartino and Tanner Thach had three hits apiece as UNCW opened its Coastal Athletic Association series with an 8-1 win over visiting Towson on Friday at Brooks Field.

With the win, the Seahawks improved to 21-13 overall and remained tied for the conference lead with Northeastern at 8-2. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 8-24 and 3-7.

DeMartino doubled in two runs in a three-run fourth inning as the Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

Thach and Jac Croom both homered for UNCW.

RJ Sales (6-2) allowed one run on six hits over six innings for the Seahawks.

Taye Robinson was joined by Jordan Peyton and Jeremy Wagner with two hits on the evening. Brian Hecklelman knocked in Towson's lone run with a sixth-inning single.

Towson starter Andrew Luczak (0-4) was saddled with the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits and walked five in four innings.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the first and seventh innings and came away empty.

The Seahawks and Tigers continue the series on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
