Shafer Tosses Gem As UNCW Powers Past Elon

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Four solo home runs, including two by Tanner Thach, backed seven strong innings by UNCW starter Jacob Shafer as the Seahawks earned a Coastal Athletic Association series win on Saturday with a 5-3 win over Elon at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks picked up their fifth series win of the season and raised their record to 13-10 on the season and 2-0 in the league. The Phoenix, meanwhile, dropped their fourth consecutive game to slip to 9-13 and 0-2.

Shafer (2-3) won his second straight start after allowing a run on three hits and a pair of walks. He fanned seven and recorded 11 groundball outs. Cooper Allen notched his first career save.

Joining Thach with homers on the game were Jac Croom and Bryan Arendt. Thach and Arendt homered back-to-back in the sixth inning. Thach, Croom and Arendt all finished with two hits.

Elon starter Ben Sieracki (1-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings of work. He finished with six strikeouts.

James Broderick had two hits for the Phoenix, including his first round tripper of the season.

The series concludes with a 2 p.m. start on Sunday as the Seahawks look to complete a sweep.
