Seahawks Extend CAA Win Streak to Eight Games

TOWSON, Maryland – The UNCW softball team ran its Coastal Athletic Association win streak to eight games behind the reliable right arms of Kara Hammock and Emily Winstead as well as timely hitting by Morgan Britt in the Seahawks' doubleheader sweep at Towson on Friday afternoon at the Tiger Softball Stadium.

The first-place Seahawks improved to 17-11 overall and are 8-0 in CAA play by prevailing over the Tigers (11-18, 3-5 CAA) by scores of 2-1 and 5-1 in Games 1 and 2, respectively, of the three-game series.

Hammock has now won her last five starts while Winstead set a career-high with 15 strikeouts.

UNCW will aim for its best nine-game start in conference play when the series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME 1 | UNCW 2, Towson 1

Britt's one-out home run in the top of the seventh broke a 1-1 deadlock and lifted the Seahawks to victory in the weekend opener.

Britt, who scored the first run of the game on a Jentri Meadows sacrifice-fly in the fifth, aided Hammock's seventh complete game and lowered the junior's season ERA to a 1.74 mark.

Hammock (9-3), who has won her last five starts, scattered two hits and worked around a fifth-inning unearned run to strike out seven. The junior righty has pitched to a 0.44 ERA through 32 innings of CAA play.

A pitcher's duel between Hammock and Towson's Maddie Gardner (3-8), the game was scoreless through four innings before both teams plated a run in the fifth. It remained even until Britt's first homer of the season pushed the Seahawks into the win column.

GAME 2 | UNCW 5, Towson 1
The Seahawk offense went to work quickly in the first and spotted Winstead (6-2) with three two-out runs on her way to her career-high strikeout total that was two away from Casey Rowland's single-game record of 17 set in 2014.

Britt began the scoring outburst with a double that scored Mary Sobataka. Consecutive RBI singles to center field by Allison Corbin and Elizabeth Winstead gave Winstead, the pitcher, all the support the junior would need in her seventh career double-digit strikeout effort and fourth complete game of the season.

Corbin, who had two of the Seahawks' 10 hits, further advanced the UNCW lead with her first career home run to straightaway center in the top of the fourth. Sobataka pushed it to 5-0 with an RBI double up an inning later.

Towson shortstop Mackenize Lake put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double.
