TOWSON, Maryland --Â The UNCW softball team was on the wrong end of a 2-1 result in a Sunday afternoon pitching duel at Towson at the Tiger Softball Stadium.
The Tigers improved to 12-18 and 4-5 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Seahawks, who won the series with two wins on Friday, stand 17-12 with an 8-1 conference record.
Towson's Maddie Gardner (4-8) tossed a complete game where she stranded 10 Seahawks on base.
The Tigers used a Cori Jones triple to plate a pair of runs in bottom of the third off junior Emily Winstead (6-3), who brought her weekend strikeout total to 19 with four strikeouts in three innings on Sunday. Senior Carrigan Ewers fired three scoreless innings in relief of Winstead.
The Seahawks added one back in the fifth when graduate outfielder Skylar Stockton singled home freshman Cassidy Relay, who had two hits in the contest.
UNCW's Mary Sobataka and Morgan Britt, who ran her on-base streak to eight games, worked back-to-back two-out walks in the top of the seventh to put the game-tying and winning runs on base but Gardner worked out of the jam to avoid the sweep.
The Seahawks next host defending CAA champion Hofstra for a three-game set at Boseman Field next weekend.
