Seahawks Take Series Opener From Elon, 13-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW used a nine-run eighth inning to break open a close game on its way to a 13-3 win over Elon in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener for both teams on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawk moved to 12-10 overall with the win while the Phoenix dropped to 9-11.

In the breakout eighth, UNCW sent 13 hitters to the plate and collected eight hits. Among those eight hits was a three-run homer off the bat of Kevin Novobilsky, his first of the season.

Luke Craig left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning with UNCW leading 4-3. Craig kept it a one-run lead by ending the inning with a strikeout.

Alec DeMartino and Tanner Thach each had three hits. DeMartino scored three runs and knocked in three. Trevor Marsh and Bryan Arendt added two hits apiece.

RJ Sales (4-1) earned the win, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings.

Alex Duffey doubled twice and knocked in two runs for the Phoenix.

Justin Mitrovich (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over seven innings while fanning seven.

The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
