#6 Duke Turns Back UNCW in Wednesday Twinbill

DURHAM, North Carolina – Sixth-ranked Duke used a four-run inning in both games to sweep UNCW in non-conference softball action at the Duke Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Devils (24-2) claimed the first game 6-1 before winning the second contest 7-0 Over the Seahawks (15-11).

UNCW next puts its 6-0 Coastal Athletic Association record on the line this weekend at Towson with a three-game series starting Friday.

GAME 1 | Duke 6, UNCW 1

A four-run four second inning keyed a 6-1 Duke win in the doubleheader opener.

The Seahawks struck first in the top of the first when right fielder Morgan Britt blooped an infield single over first base to score second baseman Tayler Vitola.

The Blue Devils then went ahead in the second that included two sacrifice flies and a pair of doubles to plate the four runs. Duke added runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Freshman Peyton Eckert (0-2) recorded her first career complete game while Duke's Dani Drogemuller improved to 4-0.

GAME 2 | Duke 7, UNCW 0

The Blue Devils collected four extra bases hits in the evening cap to win both contests.

Duke's four-run third inning was highlighted by junior Ana Gold's two-run triple. Gold's three-bagger was followed by a double off the bat of Claire Davidson and a single by Aminah Vega to complete the scoring.

Blue Devils starter Cassidy Curd (4-2) got the win while sophomore Emily Winstead (5-2) was saddled with the loss.

Sophomore Carson Fleming rocketed her first career double and worked a full-count walk in her first start of the season.
