UNCW Falls In Extra Innings To #11 ECU

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Nationally-ranked East Carolina scratched out a run in the top of the 10th to knock off UNCW, 8-7, on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Pirates, who are ranked as high as 11th, raised their record to 11-4 with the road win while the Seahawks fell to 9-8.

In the 10th, the Pirates loaded the bases with two outs and the eventual winning run scored on a wild pitch.

UNCW forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, DeMartino reached on an error and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error. Newton followed with a single deep in the second base hole, allowing DeMartino to score from second with the tying run.

Tanner Thach took the loss to drop to 0-1 for the Seahawks while Aaron Groller (1-0) picked up the win for ECU.

Kevin Jones led the UNCW offense with two hits and drove in four runs. He has a go-ahead two-run double in UNCW's four-run fourth inning.

John Newton, Jac Croom and Bryan Arendt each had two hits. Newton, who knocked in three runs on the evening, belted his first home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Justin Wilcoxen collected a game-high four hits and drove in two for the Pirates, who out-hit the Seahawks, 14-10.

The Seahawks visit Charlotte this weekend for a three-game series with the 49ers beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
