Seahawks Collect Season-High 13 Hits

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team recorded a season-high 13 hits, but Michigan State overcame a 4-2 deficit to win 10-6 on Wednesday night at Boseman Field.

The Spartans improved to 8-9 as they continued their road swing throughout the Carolinas while the Seahawks fell to 8-6.

Senior Tayler Vitola notched a season-high three hits and scored two runs. Fifth-years Morgan Britt and Skylar Stockton as well as freshman Cassidy Relay and Ava Tsiouplis each chipped in two hits for the Seahawks.

MSU freshman Makayla Huddleston (1-1) earned her first career win with 4.2 relief innings. UNCW senior Carrigan Ewers (2-3) took the loss in her eighth relief appearance.

The Seahawks started strong with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings and led 4-2 through four innings before the Spartans plated two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to knot the game, 4-all.

Michigan State, who had 14 hits in the game, then exploded for six runs in the seventh inning that was enough to pull out the win despite two UNCW runs in the seventh's bottom frame.

The Seahawks travel to Charlotte to play four games in the 49ers' tournament this weekend. UNCW will play Minnesota and Fordham on Saturday and the Gophers and Charlotte on Sunday.
