Winstead Strikes Out Season-High Eight in Shutout

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Junior Emily Winstead fashioned her first shutout of the season along with a season-high eight strikeouts as the UNCW softball team opened the Queen City Classic with a 2-0 win over Fordham on Saturday afternoon.

Winstead improved to 3-0 on the year for the Seahawks (9-6). Graduate pitcher Devon Miller (2-3) took the loss in her complete game effort for the Rams (4-10).

Senior second baseman Tayler Vitola reached base three times on two hits and an error and scored the game's first run in the top of the first on a Mackenzie Amodeo RBI double to right-center. Vitola scored both runs, including a seventh inning score on a Morgan Britt bunt that forced a Fordham throwing error.

Winstead limited the Rams to three hits and faced only five batters above the minimum.

UNCW resumes play tomorrow with back-to-back games vs. Kentucky and host Charlotte starting at 12:30 p.m.
