Seahawks Take Opener From Princeton, 14-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's John Newton collected a career-high four hits and RJ Sales allowed one hit over seven innings on Friday at the Seahawks topped Princeton, 14-1, in college baseball action at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who banged out a season-high 15 hits, pushed their record to 3-2 while the Tigers were playing their season opener.

Newton scored three runs, drove in two and missed hitting for the cycle, coming up a home run short. Jac Croom, Trevor Marsh and Alec DeMartino each had two hits for UNCW. Marsh, who scored a career-high four runs, belted his second homer of the season in the first inning to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

Sales (2-0), meanwhile, surrendered a single in the fourth inning and walked three. He struck out six and lowered his earned run average to 0.71. He's allowed a run on two hits over 12.1 innings this season and has struck out 14.

Sean Episcope (0-1), a freshman, took the loss in his collegiate debut. He surrendered six runs, five earned, on six hits and a walk in three innings of work.

Jake Bold, Dylan Zdunek and Jake Koonin had singles for Princeton. Koonin's single in the ninth prevented a Seahawk shutout.
