Big First Inning Downs Seahawks

Kent State plated three runs in the top of the first inning

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tim Orr's two-run single in the top of the first keyed a three-run outburst for Kent State as the Golden Flashes knotted the weekend series with UNCW with an 8-2 win on Saturday at Brooks Field.

Both teams enter Sunday's rubber match with 1-1 records. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.

KSU starter Eric Chalus (1-0) earned the win. The lefthander struck out nine and walked just one. He scattered three hits over five innings of work.

Jacob Shafer (0-1) took the loss for UNCW, allowing three runs over 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out three. All three runs came in the top of the first as KSU grabbed an early lead.

Jake Casey added two hits for the Golden Flash, including his first round tripper of the season. Michael McNamara also homered. Both homers came in the seventh inning.

Alec DeMartino singled and scored a run while Bromley Thornton had a RBI single in the bottom of the second. Bryan Arendt hit his second home run in as many games.
