Diamond Hawks Win Series With 5-Run Eighth

UNCW topped Kent State, 8-3, thanks to a 5-run eighth inning

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevor Marsh and Kevin Jones had three hits apiece and Connor Marshburn allowed one hit over 2.2 innings of relief as UNCW rallied with five runs in the eighth inning for an 8-3 win over visiting Kent State on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks earned the series win and moved to 2-1 while the Golden Flashes dropped to 1-2 on the young season.

Marsh finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle while Jones collected three singles.

Marsh homered in the fourth inning and his leadoff double in the eighth ignited a five-run inning as UNCW snapped a 3-all deadlock.

Also homering for UNCW were Tanner Thach and Bromley Thornton, both coming in that five-run eighth.

Marshburn (1-0), who made his collegiate debut, struck out two and escaped a jam in the sixth with the Seahawks trailing, 3-1.

Reliever Jordan Kolenda (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in that eighth inning.

KSU starter Calvin Bickerstaff held UNCW to a pair of hits over five innings of work, walked none, and struck out five.

Jake Casey, Tim Orr, and Dom Kibler each had two hits. Kibler knocked in two runs on a double in the sixth that gave KSU a 3-1 lead.

The Seahawks visit nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on Feb. 20 for a 4 p.m. start.
