Sales Dominates In Return To Mound

Seahawks top Kent State, 7-2, in season opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – RJ Sales struck out a career-high tying eight batters and Tanner Thach had two hits and three runs batted in as UNCW opened the season with a 7-2 win over Kent State on Friday at Brooks Field.

Sales (1-0), who made his first appearance since the 2022 season, limited the Golden Flashes to a run on a hit and walked two over 5.2 innings. He allowed a one-out double in the top of the first and then retired the next 14 batters he faced before opening the sixth with a hit batter.

Thach and Jac Croom both finished with two hits, with Croom doubling twice and scoring twice. Trevor Marsh added a two-run single in a four-run third inning against KSU starter Jack Kartsonas (0-1).

Bryan Arendt blasted his first home run of the season with one-out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Ripken Reese doubled in a run and scored a run to lead KSU at the plate.

The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.

Notes: The Seahawks won their fifth straight opening day and the 15th of their last 16 … Luke Craig and Connor Kane combined to allow one run over 3.1 innings of relief … Croom's double in the first inning extended his hitting streak to five games … Thach also extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the first … The game was played in 2:27
