Seahawks Shutdown ECU Late In Convincing Win

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Donovan Newby and Harlan Obioha poured in 12 points apiece as UNCW clamped down defensively late in the second half to knock off East Carolina, 67-53, in men's basketball action on Tuesday at Minges Coliseum.

The Seahawks won in Greenville for the first time since 2013 and improved to 6-2 with their third straight win. The Pirates saw their record dip to 7-2 with their first home loss of the season that also halted a modest three-game winning streak.

East Carolina narrowed its deficit to 54-49 with 9:23 remaining in the second half but would scoreless over the next 8:26 as UNCW extended its lead to 11 with 57 seconds left.

Nolan Hodge and Bo Montgomery added nine points apiece. Hodge grabbed eight rebounds and Montgomery corralled nine.

Newby held game-high honors with six assists.

Montgomery doled out three assists and posted three steals as Obioha blocked five shots.

ECU's C.J. Walker led all scorers with 16 points and was joined in double figures with Jordan Riley adding 14.

The Seahawks retake the court on Dec. 7 when they host Marshall at 2 p.m.

Notes: Newby surpassed the 1,000 career point mark … UNCW limited the Pirates to 35.8% shooting from the field, marking the third straight game the Seahawks have held their opponent under 40% … The UNCW managers knocked off the ECU staff, 81-74, on Monday evening … The home team had won each of the last seven games in the series … UNCW's nine steals were a season-best.
