Hodge, Newby Pace Seahawks in Win vs. UNC Asheville

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's Nolan Hodge and Donovan Newby combined for 41 points in the Seahawks' 85-74 men's basketball win over UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum. 

The Seahawks moved to 9-3 for the second straight season with their fifth straight home win. The Bulldogs saw their five-game win streak snapped and stand 8-5.

Hodge recorded a career-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting with a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line while all of Newby's 20 points came in a strong second half in which he hit three three-pointers. Joshua Corbin contributed 11 points.

The Bulldogs' Jordan Marsh scored a game-high 23 points along with seven assists. Freshman Kameron Taylor fashioned 18 points off the bench and Josh Banks (13) and Toyaz Soloman (11) rounded out Asheville's double-digit scorers.

UNCW opened the game on a 15-2 run, including the contest's first nine points, to build a double-digit lead six-and-a-half minutes into the afternoon matchup.

A 14-0 stretch over five minutes in the first half swelled the Seahawks' lead to a game-high 20 points, 33-13, with 6:09 to go. The Bulldogs slightly chipped away at the deficit, but UNCW carried a 44-30 lead into halftime.

Asheville started the second half strong and trimmed it to as close as three points, but Newby scored 14 of 17 Seahawk points to push the lead back to double figures, 64-53 with 10:11 left in the game, for good.

UNCW returns to action next Saturday vs. Spartanburg Methodist at 2 p.m. in Trask Coliseum.

GAME NOTES: Asheville made its first trip to Wilmington in 12 years … This is the second time this season UNCW had a pair of 20-point scorers … Harlan Obioha had nine points and nine rebounds … UNCW has not trailed in the last two games … The Seahawks are 5-0 on Fox Wilmington … Takayo Siddle is 3-0 vs. Asheville and the Seahawks are 19-9 against their western state rivals … UNCW shot 48.3 percent from the field.
