Newby, McGriff Enjoy Career Nights in Friday Night Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's Donovan Newby and Khamari McGriff enjoyed career nights as the Seahawks men's basketball team rallied past visiting Georgia Southern, 92-84, on Friday night at Trask Coliseum. 

The Seahawks improve to 2-0 on the young season behind a career-high 33 points from Newby, 19 of which came from the free throw line. McGriff secured his first career double-double with new benchmarks of 21 points and 12 rebounds. 

Joining the duo in double figures was Noah Ross with 13 points, his second straight contest in double-digits, and Joshua Corbin's 12 markers on three three-pointers made.

The Eagles dipped to 1-1 despite five with 10 or more points highlighted by Dontae Horne (23 points). Other GSU double-figure scorers included Adante' Holiman (14), Bradley Douglas (12), Eren Banks (11) and Tyson Brown (10).

The Seahawks, who trailed by as many as 14 points midway through the first half, closed the opening period with a 16-5 spurt over the last 6:15 to trail 37-34 at the half. 

The teams traded the lead 13 times, never more than four points, over the first 11 minutes of the second until Newby drilled back-to-back triples to give UNCW a 66-61 lead with 9:09 to play.

The Seahawks never relinquished their advantage, but the Eagles kept it close down to the final minute. With UNCW ahead, 86-84, with 23 seconds remaining, Corbin rattled home a three off an assist by Newby to ice the game before nearly 5,000 fans at Trask.

The Seahawks next travel to USC Upstate next Friday, Nov. 15, for a 7 p.m. contest.

GAME NOTES: UNCW has surpassed 90 points in both games this year … The Seahawks set a program record with 45 free throw's made along with 59 attempts … Newby, McGriff and Ross each had seven or more free throw's made … There were a total of 15 lead changes and five ties … Seven Seahawks played at least 16 minutes … UNCW shot 42 percent (21-of-50) … The Seahawks played a Division I opponent at home on a Friday for the first time in five seasons ... The game lasted two-hours-and-45 minutes.
