Men's Basketball Wins Road Opener, 89-85

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina – Guard Donovan Newby's team-high 20 points paced five UNCW men's basketball players in double figures as the Seahawks claimed their road opener 89-85 at USC Upstate on Friday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.

UNCW improved to 3-0 in a tightly contested game that featured 18 lead changes and 13 ties over the Spartans, who fell to 1-4 in their home opener.

Newby scored 18 points after halftime and was joined in double digits by Elijah Jamison and forward Khamari McGriff, who both had 13 points, along with season-high-tying point totals by  Greedy Williams (11) and Sean Moore (10).

Upstate's Brit Harris also had 20 points while Karmani Gregory (17), Mister Dean (14) and Breylin Garcia (10) rounded out a quartet of Spartans with 10 or more points.

UNCW erased a 49-44 halftime deficit 94 seconds into the second half to set up a close second half in which neither team led by more than five points.

The Seahawks, down 63-62 with 10:27 left in the game, received five straight points from Newby over a 30-second span to flip the advantage in their favor, 66-63.

A determined Upstate team kept it within a basket three separate times in the final minute-and-a-half, including a Harris three-pointer that made it 87-85 with 13 seconds left. UNCW, however, quickly responded with a Noah Ross game-clinching slam dunk to seal the 89-85 verdict.

UNCW continues its road swing on Tuesday at No. 1 Kansas for an 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT tip-off at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.
