Men's Basketball Earns 69-60 Win vs. Sam Houston

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team used a 21-2 run over 10 minutes in the first half to earn a 69-60 victory over Sam Houston on the second day of the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks improved to 4-2 this season with their third home win. The Bearkats dropped to 3-4 with their second straight loss. 

Guard Donovan Newby notched his fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season with a team-high 19 points, including 14 after halftime. Guard Bo Montgomery delivered 17 points off the bench while Khamari McGriff added 11 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.

Sam Houston's Lamar Wilkerson paced all scorers with 20 points, including the Bearkats first 13 points and 16 of their 20 first-half points. Forward Cameron Huefner authored 11 points while Erik Taylor contributed 10 points.

The Bearkats built an early 13-6 lead thanks to Wilkerson's hot start with 11:43 left in the first half. UNCW then erupted for 15 unanswered points, seven by Montgomery, to take a 27-15 lead with under six minutes to go and carried a 33-20 lead into halftime.

A quick 10-2 spurt by McGriff and Newby followed six straight Sam Houston-made free throws following the halftime break to build a 40-25 lead that grew to a game-high 19-point advantage, 50-31, with 12:48 left in the game. 

The Seahawks close out the inaugural Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic on Saturday vs. Appalachian State at 3 p.m. The game will be aired locally on Fox Wilmington along with FloCollege.

SEAHAWK STATS: The Seahawks limited the Bearkats to 30.4 percent shooting, the fourth-lowest mark by an opponent in the Takayo Siddle-era … UNCW and Sam Houston played for the first time since the 2015 CIT Postseason Tournament … The Seahawks limited the Bearkats to 20 first-half points, the lowest in a half since holding Northeastern to the same total on Feb. 11, 2023 … McGriff made his first career three-pointer … UNCW played on Fox Wilmington for the first of seven times this season … The Seahawks did not concede a point in the paint in the first half nor a bench point … Eight different Seahawks scored … UNCW has made 17 three-pointers in its last two games … The win ties Coach Siddle with Brad Brownell for fourth all-time on UNCW's career wins list with 83 wins as the Seahawks' bench boss … UNCW led for 30:20 … McGriff, Montgomery and Newby shot 59.2 percent (16-of-27).
