UNCW Drops 72-59 Decision vs. Colgate

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Colgate used a 12-0 second-half run to hand the UNCW men's basketball team a 72-59 setback on the opening day of the inaugural Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic on Wednesday at Trask Coliseum.

The Raiders improved to 2-4 and snapped their four-game losing streak. The Seahawks dipped to 3-2 in 2024-25.

UNCW guard Donovan Newby's 13 points paced the Seahawks for the third time this season while center Harlan Obioha narrowly missed his first double-double of the season with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Colgate guard Brady Cummins and Parker Jones each recorded 17 points with Jones also hauling in a game-high-tying nine rebounds. Raiders forward Sam Wright posted 14 points to go with six rebounds.

UNCW jumped out to an early 13-8 lead with an 11-0 spurt in the first half, but Colgate outscored the Seahawks 26-16 over the final 12 minutes of the opening period to carry a 37-29 advantage into halftime.

The Seahawks cut the lead to within a field goal three times in the first 10 minutes after halftime, including 52-49 with 10:50 to go, but the Raiders went on their decisive 12-0 run over the next 5:06 to earn the win.

UNCW continues play at the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic on Friday vs. Sam Houston at 4 p.m. The contest will be the first of seven Seahawk men's basketball games to air locally on Fox Wilmington as well as FloCollege.

SEAHAWK STATS: UNCW opened a stretch of four games in seven days on Wednesday … Trask Coliseum hosted a neutral site contest for the first time since 2012 earlier in the day when App State beat Sam Houston, 66-63 … The Seahawks had a season-high 18 offensive rebounds, tying the third-highest mark under Takayo Siddle … Wednesday was the first meeting between UNCW and Colgate … Noah Ross has held a share of the team lead in rebounds in the last three games … The Raiders shot 50 percent to the Seahawks' 34.4 percent … The Seahawks' seven-three pointers made was a season-high vs. a Division I opponent.
