WILMINGTON, N.C.– Alex Hornada's strike from the top of the penalty area in the 67th minute lifted UNCW to a 2-1 win over the College of Charleston on Saturday in a key Coastal Athletic Association game at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks pushed their conference record to 2-2 with the win and improved to 3-4-4 on the season. The Cougars, meanwhile, suffered their first conference loss of the season to slide to 2-1-1 and 7-3-1.
Hornada's game-winning goal came off feeds from Bryan Miralrio and Cesare D'Amico. Hornada advanced the ball to the left side of the field before unleashing a shot that tucked inside the right post for a 2-1 lead. It was Hornada's second goal of the season.
Jack Clarkson opened the scoring for UNCW on a goal in the 32nd minute. Clarkson scored off a free kick on the left side. For Clarkson, it was his second goal of the season.
CofC, however, drew even on Matt Lenart's tap-in goal off a short cross from Leonardo D'Ambrosio.
UNCW finished the contest with a 13-6 advantage in shots, its fifth time out-shooting an opponent in 2024, and limited the top-scoring program in the league to just two shots on goal.
The Seahawks visit Delaware on Oct. 11 for a 7 p.m. start in Newark, Del.
