WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Ethan Newsome's first career brace highlighted a 4-0 UNCW men's soccer win in Olivia's Game vs. Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 4-6-4 with a 3-3 Coastal Athletic Association record. The Seawolves dipped to 3-7-3 with a 0-5-2 league mark.
Newsome and the Seahawks jumped out to a quick start 42 seconds into the match on a header assisted by Ryan Lee and Zach Sauer. Newsome capped the day with the first two-goal game by a Seahawk in three seasons with a dazzling goal set up on a long Jack Clarkson pass forward in the 73rd minute.
Freshman Cesare D'Amicoburied his second goal of the season shortly after Newsome's first strike in the 17th minute on a Clarkson helper that gave UNCW a 2-0 lead it carried into halftime.
Sophomore Bryan Miralrio made it 3-0 on a goal aided by Caleb Powell.
Redshirt freshman Trey Smiley fashioned his first career solo shutout with a pair of first-half saves.
Proceeds raised during Olivia's Game will go towards the Olivia Knighton Endowed Scholarship, a men's soccer scholarship created last December that will annually be awarded to a deserving UNCW men's soccer player in hopes that Olivia's passion and ability to be a beautiful light will continue.
The Seahawks close out non-conference play on Wednesday at UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
