UNCW Clamps Down On Charleston In Big Win

The Seahawks ended the game with an 11-0 run over the final 5:35

WILMINGTON, N.C. – KJ Jenkins scored a season-high 20 points and UNCW held the College of Charleston scoreless over the final 5:35 of the game as the Seahawks topped Coastal Athletic Association preseason favorite the College of Charleston, 78-69, on Saturday before a sold-out crowd at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW, who has won its last four, pushed its record to 13-5 on the season and 4-2 in the conference. Charleston, meanwhile, slid to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the CAA with its second straight setback.

Trailing 69-67 with 5:20 remaining in the game, UNCW's Khamari McGriff ignited a game-ending 11-0 run with a layup off a pass from Shykeim Phillips. Phillips highlighted the run with seven points.

Jenkins finished 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point range to pace the Seahawks. Phillips added 18 points, including 16 in the second half, and Trazarien White chipped in 17 points and hauled in a team-leading seven rebounds.

CofC's Ante Brzovic held game-high honors with 27 points and was joined in double figures by Jordan Crawford, who scored 12 points coming off the bench. Brzovic rounded out a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Phillips doled out a game-high six assists and recorded three steals.

Charleston built a 38-33 lead in the first half behind Brzovic's 13 points. He was 6-of-9 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. With 2:30 left in the half, he converted a layup to give CofC its largest lead of the half, 36-28.

The Seahawks return to the road next week when they visit Northeastern and Stony Brook on Jan. 25 and 27, respectively. The game at Stony Brook will be on CBS Sportsnet.

Notes: UNCW committed a season-low four turnovers on the game … Trask Coliseum was sold out for the third straight game … The Seahawks turned eight Cougar turnovers into 14 points … The Seahawks shot 56.5% (13-23) from the floor in the second half … The game saw 11 lead changes and the score tied on 11 occasions.
