NGWSD History
Â
Feb. 7, 2024, will mark the 38th anniversary of NGWSD, a day observed by all 50 states, with the purpose of bringing national attention to girls and women in sports.Â
Â
Introduced in 1987, the first NGWSD honored Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, whose advocacy and dedication paved the way for proper representation of women in sports.
Â
NGWSD is powered by the Women's Sports Foundation, a nonprofit charity established in 1974 with an on-going mission to empower female athletes of all ages to reach their potential in sports and life.
Â
Since its formation, NGWSD has recognized the achievements of all female athletes, the positive benefits of female inclusion in sports, and the progress of an on-going journey toward equal representation in sports since Title IX was enacted in 1972.
