Seahawks Drop CAA Opener, 3-1

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's soccer team opened Coastal Athletic Association play with a 3-1 setback to Northeastern on Saturday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Huskies improved to 1-1-1 (1-0 CAA) while the Seahawks dipped to 1-1-1 (0-1 CAA).

Nearly 1,200 fans were on hand as the Seahawks staged Olivia's Game, a tribute night to Olivia Grace Knighton, the late daughter of UNCW icon and Hall of Famer Brad Knighton.

The Seahawks recorded 16 shots, including nine in the second half that featured all four of the game's goals. Northeastern finished the game with seven shots with four on goal.

After playing over 57 scoreless minutes, both teams netted scores in the 58th minute. Northeastern's Tobias Wangerud opened the scoring with a strike before UNCW's Gabe Mercer evened the contest with a goal on an assist by Jaden Strumeier.

The Huskies took the lead for good in the 66th minute on an unassisted score by Davide Romeo.

Northeastern added an insurance goal 11 minutes later courtesy of Fraser Brown.

The Seahawks next hit the road on Tuesday at South Carolina at 7 p.m.
