Late Goals Lift Seahawks Over Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – UNCW's Ethan Newsome and Cannon Tootle scored goals five minutes apart late in the second half to push the Seahawks past South Carolina 2-0 in Tuesday night men's soccer action at Stone Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 2-1-1 this season while the Gamecocks dipped to 0-3-1. UNCW has won all four previous contests in the all-time series vs. South Carolina.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Jacob Randolph fashioned his first clean sheet of the season. The Metairie, La., native collected a career-high seven saves against 15 Gamecock shots.

The Seahawks recorded eight of their nine shots following a scoreless first half for both sides.

The contest remained a 0-0 draw for nearly 72 minutes until Newsome pushed his second goal of the season past South Carolina goalkeeper Ben Alexander to give UNCW a late 1-0 lead.

Roughly five minutes later, Tootle added an insurance score when he dribbled his eighth career goal into the net to ice the game at 2-0 for the Seahawks. Redshirt junior Moss Lewis, a Wilmington, N.C., native, picked up the assist in his Seahawk debut.

UNCW continues non-conference play at home vs. East Tennessee State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
