Miralrio Nets Winning Goal in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman forward Bryan Miralrio netted the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as UNCW downed American 2-1 in Thursday night's men's soccer regular season opener at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks begin the 2023 campaign with a 1-0 record while the Eagles stand 0-1 to start the new season.

The two teams combined for 20 shots and eight corners in the tightly contested battle.

With the game tied 1-1, Miralrio found the back of the net after sophomore Ethan Newsome's shot deflected off Eagles goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts with 2:30 to play.

UNCW struck first 11 minutes into the game when graduate midfielder Gabe Mercer converted a penalty kick goal after Tibbetts was assessed a yellow card inside the box.

American evened the game at the 28:57-mark courtesy of a goal by midfielder Robert Matei that was assisted by Samuel Hershey.

The Seahawks next play at No. 9 Clemson on Monday at 7 p.m.
