CAA Student-Athletes Set To Share Ideas

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW student-athletes Makaya Parham and Ryan Hunt will have an opportunity to share ideas and network with their counterparts when the pair travels to Richmond in mid-June for the Colonial Athletic Association's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Leadership Summit.

The summit gathers two student-athletes and one SAAC advisor from each of the conference's 14 schools, who will meet June 15-17 to engage with faculty athletic representatives in order to gain insight into the student-athlete experience as well as address national and conference issues.

The group, meeting for the first time in-person since the Covid-19 pandemic, will also participate in a local community service activity.

Parham plays defense for the Seahawk women's soccer team. The Raleigh, N.C., native was one of three players to start all 17 regular season games last year, helping the Seahawks to five clean sheets during the season.

"I was selected to participate in the CAA SAAC Summit because I have been a part of the UNCW SAAC executive board for the past two years," said Parham, who has served as vice-president and president.

Hunt, a redshirt senior on the men's track and field team from Durham, N.C., is majoring in recreation. Last season, he earned All-CAA honors after finishing third in the decathlon at the 2022 CAA Championships.

"I want to learn more about professional settings revolving collegiate sports, since I hope to work in collegiate sports after I graduate with my Master's Degree," Hunt said.

Student-Athlete Academic Coordinator/Director of Student-Athlete Development Jaime Mangold will be accompanying the student-athletes at the meeting.

"It means a lot to be able to bring two of our amazing student-athlete leaders, Makaya and Ryan, to this conference," said Mangold. "They will be able to have this unique experience and connect with other student-athlete leaders in the CAA."
