Diamond Hawks Power Past Huskies, 7-2

UNCW evens series and gives Coach Hood 100 career wins

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tanner Thach homered twice and Zane Taylor held Northeastern to an unearned run over six innings as UNCW knocked off nationally-ranked Northeastern, 7-2, to even the Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 26-17 on the season and 15-6 in the CAA. The Huskies had their nine-game winning streak halted with the loss and dipped to 36-8 and 17-6 in the league.

The win gave UNCW Head Coach Randy Hood 100 career wins in 168 career games, second fastest for a Seahawk skipper.

Thach homered in the fourth and fifth innings, giving him 14 on the season and setting a new program record for home runs by a freshman. He was joined by Brock Wills, Dillon Lifrieri and Jac Croom with two hits apiece on the afternoon.

Taylor, a sophomore, surrendered an unearned run in the first inning before settling down and tossing five shutout innings against the top offense in the conference. He scattered five hits, walked two and struck out four in improving to 5-2. Freshman Connor Kane notched his second save by going three innings and allowing a run on three hits. He stuck out three and did not issue a walk.

NU's Mike Sirota collected three hits at the top of the order while Luke Beckstein added two hits, including his third home run of the season in the ninth inning.

The series concludes on Sunday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. Sunday will be Bats and Brews Youth Day with those 15 and under being admitted for free to the game.

How it happened: Thach tied the game at 1-all with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth. The Seahawks would add three runs in the home half of the fifth all coming off a three-run shot to center by Thach for a 5-1 lead.

Home Runs: UNCW: Thach 2 (14, off Yost in the fourth inning to right center, 389 feet, 109 exit velocity; off Harrington in the fifth inning to center, 385 feet, 105 exit velocity); Northeastern: Beckstein (3, off Kane in the ninth inning to left center, 374 feet, 98 exit velocity)

Notes: The previous record for home runs by a UNCW freshman was 12 by Matt Sutton in 2003 … With 14 home runs, Thach moves into the NCAA top five for freshmen … Kane now has five relief appearances of at least three innings … In CAA play, Kane has a 1.53 ERA in 17.2 innings and has held opponents to a .164 batting average … UNCW is 5-6 versus ranked teams this season and 7-9 against the top 100 in the RPI … UNCW donned jerseys with the colors of blue and orange and they were auctioned off during the game with the proceeds going to the Miracle League of Wilmington.
