Seahawk Thinclads Set For CAA Championships

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With seven in-season meets in the books, the UNCW track and field teams now set their sights on the big prize – the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships set for Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, 2023, at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va.

The Seahawks have set five school records and two freshman marks heading into the two-day meet on the campus of William & Mary. The teams have also registered 37 event wins and 26 personal bests over the last five months.

Conference newbies Hampton, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook make this year's meet the largest in history. The women's field will feature 12 teams, while a record eight teams will contest for the title on the men's side.

"We're ready to go," said fourth-year head coach Jeff Klaves. "The team has done a great job building momentum throughout the season and is locked in going into the CAA Championships.

"Going into the first year of the new CAA, we've communicated that it's about us and controlling the controllables from within. Everyone is ready to run their race, jump their jump and hit their throw. The meet will showcase the work they have been putting in all season."

Action begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday with the women's weight throw. Field event champions will also be crowned in the men's hammer throw (noon), women's pole vault (12:30 p.m.), men's long jump (1 p.m.), men's javelin (1:30 p.m.) women's long jump (4:00 p.m.), men's pole vault (5:00 p.m.) and men's discus (5:45 p.m.).

Running prelims begin at 1 p.m. and continue throughout the opening day, with the last four events contested as finals. Gold medals will be awarded in the men's (5:45 p.m.) and women's (6:00 p.m.) 3000m steeplechase as well as the men's (7:00 p.m.) and women's (7:45 p.m.) 10,000m.

On the women's side for the Seahawks, junior distance runner Kendall Hobbs (Beavercreek, Ohio) has picked up a team-high six event wins this spring, including four golds in the 5,000 Meters. Junior Jayda Hunter (Jacksonville, N.C.) has captured four events.

Senior Josh Parks, who earned All-CAA in six events one year ago, has collected five victories over four different events on the men's side. The Kannapolis, N.C., product won both the 100m and 400m hurdles last year. Sophomore Ryan DeBarber (Enfield, Conn.) has won the javelin competition in three meets.

Defending champion Donovan Lara (Seagrove, N.C.) is ranked first in the CAA in the high jump (6-11.75) and sophomore Ivan Poag (Mocksville, N.C.) owns the top conference mark in the triple jump (47.8.50) entering the meet.

Klaves added, "Year to year, we always set a mission statement of what we are collectively trying to accomplish. This year, our mission was 'One of Many' and to be a group of high achievers where anyone, on any given day can win. We're proud of this group and look forward to a great meet where they get to show the world all the work they've put in this year."
