Walks Key Big Inning Lifting CofC Over UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston opened a key Colonial Athletic Association series with a 4-3 win over visiting UNCW on Friday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars won their second straight outing and improved to 31-17 overall and 16-9 in the league. The Seahawks, who dropped into second place with the loss, saw their records dip to 27-19 and 16-7.

Ty Good (7-2) was credited with the win for CofC. Good held the Seahawks to two runs on two hits over his six innings. He walked six and struck out four.

Luke Wood and Cam Dean finished with two hits apiece for the Cougars. Harlan Trotter added a hit and scored twice.

Will Privette nailed down his eighth save of the season and moved into a tie for the conference lead with that number.

Bryan Arendt, Taber Mongero and Dillon Lifrieri had the only three hits for the Seahawks on the evening. Arendt's hit came with the bases loaded in the sixth and drove in two runs. Lifrieri added an RBI single in the ninth to narrow the deficit to 4-3.

Jacob Shafer (6-4) took the loss, going five-plus innings before making way for the bullpen in the sixth.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.

How it happened: After seeing the Seahawks take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, Charleston opened the bottom half of the inning with four straight walks to tie the game and then took the lead on an RBI single to left by Cam Dean. CofC added a third run in the inning on a wild pitch for a 4-2 lead.

Notes: The teams combined for 15 walks on the night … Reliever Matt Gaither, who pitched an inning, lowered his earned run average in conference play to 0.55, allowing one earned run in 16.2 innings … UNCW is now 7-14 at Patriots Point against the Cougars and 20-21 overall in the series.
