Softball Sweeps Hampton on Sunday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team outscored Hampton 15-1 over three games to earn its third Colonial Athletic Association sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (17-20, 11-4 CAA) downed the Pirates (11-19, 2-9 CAA) 5-1 in the first game that resumed after Friday's weather-related suspension and run-ruled Hampton 8-0 in the second contest. UNCW then blanked the Pirates 2-0 to close out the series.

UNCW next travels to Elon for a key three-game conference at Hunt Softball Park, the site of the Seahawks' 2022 CAA Championship, next weekend.

GAME 1 | UNCW 5, Hampton 1

UNCW totaled 13 hits, the second-highest mark this season, while Emily Winstead (3-3) and Janel Gamache (S,1) limited Hampton to three hits and one run to get the win.

The Seahawks registered multi-hit efforts from four different players, including second baseman Tayler Vitola's three hits. Left fielder Arial Pearce (2-for-4) also drove in two runs and scored a run.

Catcher Mackenzie Amodeo gave UNCW a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Friday with an RBI double down the left field line before play was suspended until Sunday due to rain.

When play resumed, fifth-year Logan Bjorson followed with a double that scored Stormi Nichols, who pinch-ran for Amodeo. Pearce capped the three-run inning with her second RBI single of the day two batters later.

GAME 2 | UNCW 8, Hampton 0 (five innings)

Right-hander Kara Hammock (8-6) struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced as UNCW cruised to an 8-0 victory.

Hammock lowered her ERA to 1.70 with her seventh complete game and second shutout of 2023.

The Seahawks, who led 4-0 after the third inning, collected four hits and took advantage of three Hampton errors to plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The decisive frame was highlighted by Arial Pearce's' single up the middle that scored the game-winning run.

GAME 3 | UNCW 2, Hampton 0

UNCW's Amberlyn Pearce (1-3) matched scoreless frames with Hampton's Jordyn Scott (2-5) for 4.5 innings until the Seahawks scored twice on a Mary Sobataka single in the bottom of the fourth.

Arial Pearce and Vitola both singled to start the inning and advanced to second and third on a Gamache sac-fly to right. Catcher Jada Santiago was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for Sobataka.

Down 1-2 in the count, Sobataka laced a single up the middle, just past the glove of Scott, to score Pearce and Vitola and give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

Junior Carrigan Ewers (S,1) closed the deal with three scoreless innings in relief.
