Hammock, Seahawks Earn Twinbill Split at Elon

ELON, North Carolina – Right-hander Kara Hammock's 16th career complete game helped UNCW earn a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader split vs. Elon on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park.

The Seahawks (18-21, 12-5 CAA) edged the Phoenix (16-21, 9-4 CAA) 2-1 in the second game after Elon claimed the opener with a 6-1 verdict.

UNCW's 12 conference wins are the second most in program history, one behind the 2006 Seahawks' 13 CAA victories.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. rubber match.

GAME 1 | Elon 6, UNCW 1

Elon scored five runs in the first two innings, including a Carley Davis two-run double, to push past UNCW in the weekend opener.

The Phoenix's McKenna McCard (5-3) tossed a two-hit complete game, giving up one run over 80 pitches.

Seahawks right-hander Emily Winstead (3-4) took the loss after issuing four walks in over an inning of work.

Sophomore catcher Mackenzie Amodeo blasted her third home run of the year over the left-field wall in the fifth to put UNCW on the board.

GAME 2 | UNCW 2, Elon 1

Hammock (9-6) scattered three hits while limiting Elon to one run in the afternoon capper to lower her season ERA to 1.65. Hammock's eighth complete game of 2023 equals her total from her freshman CAA Rookie of the Year campaign.

McCard (5-4) took the ball again but lasted only two innings before Phoenix reliever Isley Duggins tossed the remainder of the game.

Senior outfielder Skylar Stockton's first career home run evened the game at 1-all in the second inning after Davis' second double of the day scored a run in the bottom of the first.

A pair of Phoenix fifth-inning errors gave UNCW the lead as Morgan Britt reached on a throwing error with one out and came around to score when the Phoenix misplayed an Arial Pearce knock to second two batters later.
