Softball Drops Doubleheader vs. #11 Duke

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW dropped a doubleheader to No. 11 Duke on Wednesday afternoon at Boseman Field, falling 8-0 in five innings in the first game before the Blue Devils rallied for a 5-3 win in the twinbill capper.

The Blue Devils improved to 30-8 while the Seahawks dipped to 14-20.

Sophomore Elizabeth Winstead extended her hitting streak to 11 games with an infield single in the fifth inning of Game 1.

GAME 1 | Duke 8, UNCW 0

Duke plated six runs in the first two innings and then added a pair on an Ana Gold two-run home run in the top of the fourth to claim the inaugural match between the two schools.

Gold and middle infielder Aminah Vega combined for two hits, three runs and six RBI.

Junior right-hander Jala Wright (7-4) tossed all five innings with 10 strikeouts while limiting the Seahawks to two hits.

Junior right-hander Carrigan Ewers (1-4) surrendered six runs, four unearned, with two strikeouts and three walks in 2.0 innings.

GAME 2 | Duke 5, UNCW 3

The Blue Devils rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning to sweep both games.

Duke left-hander Casey Curd (9-0) tossed a complete game, striking out seven against three hits and four walks.

Right-hander Kara Hammock (7-6) pitched six innings with five strikeouts.

The Seahawks scored all three runs in the bottom of the second when senior Skylar Stockton shot a bases-loaded grounder to shortstop Jada Baker, who misfired a throw to second base that sailed into right field and cleared the bases.

Duke pulled ahead 4-3 two innings later when it took advantage of three UNCW miscues in the fourth, sending all nine batters to the plate.

UNCW hosts Hampton in a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a Friday afternoon doubleheader at 3 p.m. A decision on the third game will be made Friday night after looking at the weekend weather forecast.
