Pitching Powers Seahawks to Doubleheader Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Powered by strong performances in the circle by Kara Hammock and Janel Gamache, UNCW swept both games of a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader vs. Drexel on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (20-24, 14-6 CAA) used an eight-run first inning to down the Dragons (12-32, 5-14 CAA) 9-1 in five innings in the first game before closing the day with a 4-1 result.

Hammock (10-8) and Gamache (5-4) scattered seven hits and two runs, one earned, over 11.2 innings in the doubleheader as the UNCW pitching dropped its league-low ERA to 2.57.

The Seahawks also set a new program record with 14 conference wins in a season, surpassing the 2006 team's 13 victories.

UNCW and Drexel will conclude the series on Sunday at Noon.

GAME 1 | UNCW 9, Drexel 1 (five innings)

Shortstop Mary Sobataka's third career grand slam to straightaway center highlighted an eight-run first inning, the most in a single season this season, to open Senior Weekend with a win.

The first eight Seahawks to bat reached safely and scored in the seven-hit frame, two of which came courtesy of second baseman Tayler Vitola. The speedy junior, Vitola, bunted on to start the inning and later drove in a run with a double down the left-field line.

Four of the first five UNCW hitters singled while catcher Jada Santiago was hit by a pitch to bring home the first run. Sobataka, with a 2-1 count, cleared the bases with her third home run of the season.

Hammock carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth, but two singles spoiled the no-hit bid and shutout after Drexel's Madison Gayle drove in the Dragons' lone run with a two-out knock up the middle.

GAME 2 | UNCW 4, Drexel 1

Gamache lowered her ERA to 1.51, the lowest in the CAA, through 6.2 innings while producing a 1-for-3 showing at the plate.

Like the first game, Vitola started the bottom of the first with a bunt single. Drexel pitcher Lindsay Nelson (3-18) then committed two errors on the next batter, Arial Pearce, which scored Vitola and placed Pearce on third. Pearce then crossed home on a wild pitch to put the Seahawks ahead, 2-0.

UNCW added another run in the inning when right fielder Morgan Britt reached on a miscue, stole second and third and then scored on a throwing error by Gayle.

Gamache held the Dragons scoreless through five innings until Drexel put two on with one out in the sixth. After inducing a fly-out, Gamache appeared to escape the jam before a Seahawk throwing error allowed Drexel to score an unearned run.

UNCW added an insurance run on a Britt RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to score Gamache, who led off with a double.
