Winstead Shines as Seahawks Complete Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore right-hander Emily Winstead tossed her first complete game of the season to help the UNCW softball team sweep its final home weekend with a 3-1 victory over Drexel at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks improved to 21-24 with a 15-6 Colonial Athletic Association record. The Dragons stumbled to 12-33 overall and are 5-15 in the league.

UNCW has swept every home CAA series this season for the first time in program history. The Seahawks recorded a 17-9 record at Boseman Field in 2023.

Winstead (4-4) limited Drexel to four hits and one run, a second-inning RBI single by Savaanah Garcia, while striking out six batters.

The Dragons' Lindsay Nelson (3-19) pitched all six innings and surrendered six hits and three runs, two earned.

Senior shortstop Mary Sobataka launched her second home run of the weekend and fourth of the season in the bottom of the second after Garcia briefly neutralized a first-inning run by UNCW.

Lead-off hitter Tayler Vitola singled and then stole second base to start the bottom of the first. Sophomore Arial Pearce (2-for-3) then fouled out to Drexel first baseman Lily Meuninck, who attempted to nail Vitola advancing to third base. The throw, however, sailed into left field and allowed Vitola to trot home for the game's first run.

In her final at-bat at Boseman Field, graduate two-way player Janel Gamache added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to center field that scored Pearce.

Gamache joined departing Seahawks Averi Allen, Logan Bjorson, Susie Borda, Amberlyn Pearce and Jada Santiago as UNCW players who partook in their final home series of their college careers.

UNCW closes out its regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Charleston on Friday and Saturday.
